How Anthera found the right companies to run a PFAS remediation pilot

Anthera Remediation Technologies has developed a photocatalytic oxidation process that destroys PFAS in contaminated water and soil at scale and more efficiently than existing technologies. The model is to finalise the development and license the technology to remediation contractors and environmental consultants. To get there, Anthera needed a pipeline of potential pilot and commercial partners, especially waste handlers, decontamination specialists and remediation contractors willing to fund a paid pilot ahead of launch. Fluum worked with Anthera to find and reach those companies.

What Anthera was facing

The Challenge

Anthera is selling into a very specific part of the market. The right buyers are already dealing with contaminated land, hazardous waste or PFAS-affected sites, and they need to be able to move quickly enough to fund and run a paid pilot. The first outreach focused on larger, established contractors, but they tended to move too slowly. Anthera needed a more precise way to identify the smaller group of companies that were both relevant and realistically able to act.

Before vs. After

Before

  • Large, established contractors targeted first, too slow to convert
  • One buyer persona, with no systematic way to refine it
  • No dedicated resource to separate genuinely active PFAS/contaminated-land companies from adjacent but irrelevant ones
  • Outreach run in occasional bursts, with no consistent cadence

After

  • Full UK market mapped, 430 companies profiled and cross-checked against registry filings
  • Buyer profile expanded from 2 to 7 core personas, plus a testing-lab referral bucket
  • A mix of standard and less conventional channels reaching 1,124 relevant decision-makers in the first 30 days, 23 replies
  • 9 meetings booked with named companies matching the profile

How Fluum Ran It

PHASE 1

Set up the pipeline

We started by defining Anthera's target profile around UK environmental services and remediation companies, while excluding companies already known to the team. From there, we began outreach across a mix of standard and less conventional channels.

PHASE 2

Refined the buyer profile

The first wave of outreach showed that the larger contractors were unlikely to move at the speed Anthera needed. We then mapped the UK market more broadly, covering 430 companies, and tightened the profile around decontamination specialists, waste handlers and remediation contractors that were better placed to run a paid pilot. The research also picked up an important mismatch early on: one company Anthera had viewed as a model customer was actually selling competing PFAS chemistry. Instead of treating it as a straightforward buyer, we repositioned the conversation around a possible treatment-train partnership. Over the course of the work, the core buyer profile expanded from 2 personas to 7. We also kept a separate testing-lab bucket for companies that were useful as analysis or referral partners, rather than as direct pilot buyers.

ONGOING

Scaled outreach

Using the refined profile, Fluum reached 1,124 relevant decision-makers in the first 30 days of the scaled campaign. That generated 23 replies from waste handlers, remediation contractors and environmental consultants, and led to 9 booked meetings with companies that matched Anthera's target profile.

"Although Anthera did not fit Fluum's typical customer profile, the Fluum team invested significant effort into understanding the environmental remediation market and developing a strategic segmentation and outreach plan. I am thoroughly impressed by their dedication, effort, and responsiveness."

Key Takeaway

For Anthera, the hard part was not finding companies that worked somewhere around remediation. It was finding the much smaller group that understood the problem, fit the commercial model and could move quickly enough to run a pilot. The work with Fluum has turned that into a clearer, repeatable pipeline, with 9 relevant meetings already booked.
